The Beggar

Paul Bourgeois, Sept. 30, 2016

fingers touch forehead

smearing dirt to dirt

like warpaint framing eyes

and hands fall

and pull back paper skin

from bottle

lips to lips

staining purple

“spare some change”

social propriety holds her tongue

as she lifts her infant into its

safety seat

and drives away

tears in her eyes
